Pupil Premium is additional funding for publicly funded schools in England to raise the attainment of disadvantaged pupils or pupils from low income families, to help support eligible pupils to reach their potential, both academically and socially.
Pupil Premium gives schools extra funding to raise the attainment of disadvantaged pupils from Reception to Year 11.
This funding is at the discretion of the school on how, what and who to spend it on. Please see Sherborne Abbey’s Pupil Premium Strategy attached below.
Please do apply for this funding if you know you are entitled to it, as the school makes great use of every penny of it, providing interventions, extra staffing and resources and helping parents with trips and uniform.
The Government introduced the fund in April 2011 to give schools funding for children who:
- Are registered as eligible for Free School Meals- see criteria below
- Have been registered for Free School Meals any time in the past 6 years- Forever 6
- Have been adopted from the care, have a special guardianship order, a child arrangements order or a residence order

Service Pupil Premium
Parents who serve in the regular armed forces can apply for Service Pupil Premium (SPP) for their child’s school. The current amount is £300. Please note that this is paid in arrears to the school annually.

Free School Meals Pupil Premium Funding is available if you are in receipt of one of these:
- Income Support
- Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
- Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
- Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
- The guaranteed element of Pension Credit
- Child Tax Credit. This is as long as you are not entitled to Working Tax Credit and your annual gross income isn’t more than £16,190
- Working Tax Credit ‘run-on’ payment (paid for four weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit)
- Universal Credit
